Riding High On a Deep Depression

The title of this post is a line from one of my all-time favorite songs by one of my all-time favorite bands. (Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage ... just in case you couldn't name the tune). I often feel this way in my real life and in my poker game.

On Thursday night, I took down the Twitter Poker Tour's Turkey Day Event. I had a lot of fun playing the game and just got really lucky even when I didn't need to. I remember hearing Johnny Chan once say that you needed not "nine, but ten lives to win a poker tournament." (Really wish I could find the exact quote), but...that's what happened.

When things are going so good, you feel great. you want the feeling to remain. However, the sadistic side of me (or the game of poker) is that you want to play again and think you are a bit on the invincible side.

Friday and Saturday showed me otherwise. After losing about 1/2 of the money I won at the Twitter Poker Tour event, I decided to call it quits and just ... reevalute myself and my playing style...and put my ego back in check.

Yes, I do have a big ego and as soon as I can learn to manage it, I won't have to ride high on a deep depression or go low after reaching the heights of winning, but I'm not there yet. I know I'll get there because poker is about more than the game for me, it's about living life and learning those lessons that are hardest to learn.

Love, peace and Happy Holidays to all of you. Among my New Year's Resolutions is to post more here :)
